Old Painless – Demo Songs

INTRODUCTION TO Old Painless

Hailing from Manchester in the UK. Old Painless are in the business of rock and make no excuses and take no prisoners! Currently formed as a four piece they plan to be adding a second guitar player in the near future from maximum guitar shred capacity. Various members of the band have been playing in the Manchester heavy rock scene for a few years including in the popular Blastronaut.

Tracklist

1. Deep and Wide

This one gets started with cowbell and feedback then moving into a driving guitar riff that any Angus Young fan would appreciate. This track has more of an up-tempo hard rock/punk groove to it rather than some of the heavier tracks on the release. After the breakdown around 3:30 the bass takes the stage with Nathan bringing the track home with an extended leads and melodic lines.

2. Fleetfooted Mankiller

Riffs are the main story here as guitarist Nathan pulls out all of the 80’s Marshall JCM 800 riffage anyone can muster. While the main guitar riff is the star of this track the rhythm section of Andy (bass) and Lewis (drums) hold up their end of the deal by laying down the foundation to really drive the track. Vocalist Dave employs a fairly hook laden chorus to keep things moving. This in tandem with the background vocals make this track stand out as the most “Spotify friendly”, as nobody listens to radio anymore!

3. Just Another Case of Bad Luck

Again, guitarist Nathan get things going with heavy feedback driven start. For the guitar fans out there, you will enjoy the crunch of what must surely be a Marshall amp at its best. At around 2:40 the rhythm section is highlighted by Lewis pounding out tom fills and Andy’ propulsive bass providing the foundation under Nathan’s guitar feedback. As the song tempo picks back up it moves into a heavier doom style vibe on the way to a Page Hamilton style noise rock crescendo.

4. Rusty Hammer

This track in very unique in that it is almost two songs in one. The first being a heavy driving stoner/rock song and the second half moving into a more atmospheric section with guitar reverb, delay, and feedback calling to mind the most recent output from 90’s alternative rockers Hum. Nathan plays some very melodic and tasty lines for maximum effect while Andy lays down some mid-range bass lines under the din of guitar effects. Vocalist Dave has a style that can best be described as channeling the baby of Phil Anselmo and King Buzzo of the Melvins.

Lineup
Andy – Bass
Dave – Vocals
Lewis – Drums
Nathan – Guitar

The Vision Bleak – “Weird Tales”

Introduction to The Vision Bleak

The Vision Bleak, formed by Markus Stock and Tobias Schönemann, also known as Schwadorf and Konstanz respectively, has been a household name in the gothic metal genre. Known for their theatrical and dark orchestral metal, the duo’s music is a perfect blend of drama, heaviness, melancholy, and symphonic elements. The German duo’s seventh full-length “Weird Tales” is a massive tribute to the eponymous American magazine and other tales of mystery and dark imagination.

The Story Behind “Weird Tales”

“Weird Tales” is a unique album in The Vision Bleak’s discography. It is a single track, divided into twelve internal chapters, each inspired by various tales, poems, and literature of horror and the macabre. The album constitutes a monumental tribute to the eponymous American pulp magazine and other tales of mystery and dark imagination. On “Weird Tales”, THE VISION BLEAK are referring to H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, in addition to Edgar Allen Poe and Lafcadio Hearn, whose “Fantastics and Other Fancies” was influential for this album.

The Making of “Weird Tales”

The making of “Weird Tales” was not a small feat. The duo had to work meticulously to ensure that each chapter was distinct yet flowed seamlessly into the next. They utilized a variety of instruments, from haunting bells to violins, guitars, and keyboards, to create a rich and atmospheric sound that complements the dark and eerie tales they narrate.

Noteworthy Chapters in “Weird Tales”Note

Several chapters in “Weird Tales” stand out for their exceptional storytelling and musical composition. “Chapter II: In Rue d’Auseil,” “Chapter IV: Once I Was a Flower,” and “Chapter VIII: The Undying One” are notable sections of the album.

Chapter 1: Introduction

A short moody track to set the stage, with synth mixed with dark tones. The track melts directly into the next chapter.

Chapter 2: In Rue d’Auseil

This track is directly inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s The Music of Erich Zann.  It has a powerful metal vibe based on a straight-ahead catchy riff. The Goth vocal stylings of Konstanz might remind of Bauhaus or Sisters of Mercy.  The synth tones blend with the heavier metal to create a dream like state. A very interesting track to introduce The Vision Bleak’s blend of Goth and metal.

Chapter 3: In Gardens Red, Satanical

Dark piano tones start this track, driving into a hammer of doom metal riff. This isa very heavy song in addition to having an eerie haunting style of atmospherics.

Chapter 4: Once I Was a Flower

A more melodic and accessible track with piano and acoustic guitar at the start of the song., which lead into more aggressive and harder edged parts.  The Gothic influences of the band are on full display, especially in the vocals. The Lafcadio Hearn short story is the inspiration for this song. It’s the narration of a flower that accompanies a dying girl to her tomb.

Conclusion

“Weird Tales” is a testament to The Vision Bleak’s innovative approach to music. The album is a captivating blend of horror tales and gothic metal that takes the listener on an unforgettable journey. Whether you’re a longtime fan of The Vision Bleak or new to their music, “Weird Tales” is a must-listen.

Samsara Joyride-The Subtle and The Dense

Samsara Joyride, the Vienna Austria-based blues, stoner, psych rock band, has been making waves in the music industry with their unique blend of Psych/Stoner/Blues jams since 2020. Released on February 23rd, 2024 the album is available on most streaming platforms and the band’s Bandcamp page. Let’s take a trip to the desert via Vienna and enjoy the ride as they take us into “The Subtle and The Dense.”

To Capture the Essence

The limited-edition Vinyl comes in Oxblood color and with an 8-page booklet (Artwork by Daniel Batliner and Laura Fichtenkamm) + additional download card.

Heaviness Found: “I Won’t Sign Pt.1”

The journey begins with high volume yell to call out what is to come next! The distorted bass rumble of Daniel Batliner and drum groove played  by Andi Mittermühlner are the foundation upon which the songs get its drive. Then once the dual riffing and solos of Florian Miehe and Michael Haumer kick in you are in for quite the sonic extravaganza.

The Rising Crescendo: “I Won’t Sign Pt. 2”

The second part of the first track Pt 2. is purely an instrumental affair that starts on a slow boil of atmospheric riffs building to an aggressive crescendo of heavy drum fills and blazing guitar solos until the end of the track.

The Stomp of Doom: “Too Many Preachers”

This track begins with a slow doom style riff and drum beat that has a Black Sabbath/Alice in Chains dirge. As the song progresses there are guitar harmonics, stop and start accents and a general sense that dread is about to befall all who dare to listen. The section from 4:15 to 5:50 is a section that is calling all to bow down to “The Rock”! Any stoner/hard rock fan will clearly know the band means business after listening to this track.

Dark Rhythms Are Calling: “Sliver”

The rhythm section here provides a very solid foundation for the guitars and vocals to shine. Mittermühlner has a great bass drum sound and crack to the snare with a hint of reverb that provides an additional accent to each drum hit. Once again Batliner has the right tone, deep and bass heavy without being muddy. The vocal highlight is at about 2:30 when both Haumer and Miehe are giving it their all and with the dynamics of each it makes for an interesting vocal. The outro is a chug fest that any hard rock/doom fan would enjoy.

The Dream is Real: “Who Tells The Story”

This track highlights SJ at their best. The full sonic palette is on display with tasty guitar fills, reverb enhanced lead guitar lines, distorted bass lines and high-powered vocals. At around the 4 1/2-minute mark the song begins to slow down with Batliner’s distorted and possibly flanger effected bass taking the point to send the song in a new direction. With the lead and background vocals taking center stage to exclaim, “Who Tells The Story”. This section is slowed down with cleaner guitar tones until the dual lead guitar lines break back in for the tempo to pick up and drive the song to its conclusion.

If You Want to Be Free: “No One Is Free”

This track starts out as a slow burn blues rock jam with tasty lead guitar licks before picking up the tempo about halfway thorough to become a hard charging heavy rocker that is certain to get your attention.

Light It Up: “Safe and Sound”

The album closer is a great change of pace from the sonic blast of the previous tracks. With a blues jazz swing type of vibe with saxophone accents and very solid background vocals from Laura Fichtenkamm. The vocal interplay between the deep baritone of Miehe and the higher register of Fichtenkamm works very well here. Tracks like this demonstrate the unique influences and creativity of the band and the ability to stand out among the crowd. For those of you who may be fortunate enough to visit the Southern California high desert of Joshua Tree this is your jam to play while star gazing!

Line Up:

Florian Miehe – Vocals/Guitar

Daniel Batliner – Bass

Andi Mittermühlner – Drums

Michael Haumer – Vocals/Guitar

Conclusion

In “The Subtle and The Dense,” Samsara Joyride has created an album that solidifies their place in the pysch/blues/desert rock landscape. The album takes listeners on a journey through heavy blues rock jams with hints of psychedelia and harder edged rock with enough guitar shredding to make any guitar fan enjoy the proceedings. The band has expanded their sound with a concerted effort to drive songs with heavier riffing, while at the same time knowing when to dial things down and marinate in a slower atmospheric brew of guitar reverb, fuzz bass and even saxophone at times.

The musicianship as expected has only grown stronger since 2022’s self-titled release. The rhythm section of Batliner and Mittermühlner complement each other well and with the addition of some well-placed bass effects adds a subtle heaviness under the guitar lines. With two fully capable players in Miehe and  Haumer the challenge may often be who gets to shine and who would take a backseat as both can craft great lead and melodic lines. There is no shortage of interesting guitar lines and high intensity solos, and yet when called upon both players know when to let the groove take over and give songs room to breathe a bit. Overall this is a great effort by the band that has an appeal to a wide range of listeners.

(Desert Spotlight) WHISKEY & KNIVES VOL 4 – LIVE FROM DE NILE

Released in October of 2020, and available in limited press 12” vinyl through http://www.h42records.com. There were only 250 copies made available worldwide on black, clear and turquoise vinyl.  Coming in at 13 minutes with five songs this can be considered more of an EP than a full length but make no mistake, if you want a short blast of punk energy, this is your jam.

Whatcha Get – An energetic start to the album, the band is running full tilt here. Hernández’ is the engine driving the track with his famous hard driving, “4 on the floor” style beats. Arnold’s punk power chording is a highlight, and with the bass fully locked in with Hernández’ the rhythm section is in form to deliver the goods. Baseley’s vocal rasp really fits the song and he stays within his range and does not try to overdo it with vocal gymnastics.

Head Nurse Betty – Another great full-tilt song with a punk vibe and fast-paced, hard-edged melody. Is Nurse Betty a real person? No way to know but this is definitely a good rocking punk jam to get the party started.

Sancha Mirage – This track is more of a midtempo rocker with a catchy chorus that could be the most, “radio friendly” of the release, while still maintaining the punk edge of the other tracks. This song would fit right in with the early 90’s desert punk scene. Arnold is in fine form here and the guitar solo checks all of the punk rock boxes.

Brother Nature – This track has a more slowed down desert/space rock vibe than the straight-ahead punk of some of the other tracks. opening bass line is narcotic. If the album cover were any of these songs, this is it.

Strange Devotion – This song can be considered the most hardcore track of the release with its fast, energetic, high tempo that borders on hardcore. High intensity is the name of the game on this track with Arnold blazing a lead and Baseley barking out the chorus much like a drill sergeant would!

Overview:

Whiskey and Knives is closer to the punk bombast of desert punk heroes Unsound than the more familiar well known desert rock bands. Baseley as vocalist is in fine form as the primary vocalist with his raspy vocal stylings on these songs are gladly received. Arnold’s guitar playing is straight ahead with power that fulfills what is required of each track with short, tasty solos and guitar fills.

Current bass player Armando Flores is not on the record, but has the chops and ability to lay down the original bass lines recorded by Reeder and Arnold respectively. Hernández’ with a pedigree of having played in Kyuss, Yawning Man and various desert rock bands is the beat master who keeps things propelling forward with his hard-hitting style.

You can find Whiskey and Knives on streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and their Bandcamp page.

Lineup:

Jason Baseley, vocals

Jon Arnold, lead guitar and bass

Alfredo Hernández, drums

Scott Reeder, bass

Green Lung’s ability to create an oppressive atmosphere is on full display here, leaving you with a sense of unease and anticipation.

The Lysergic Furore: “Oceans Of Time”

Closing the album on a high note, “Oceans Of Time” provides a lysergic furore that echoes through the trees. The song slowly releases you back into reality after being a willing participant in Green Lung’s hedonistic party. It’s a mesmerizing and atmospheric track that leaves a lasting impression.

Conclusion
In “This Heathen Land,” Green Lung has created an album that solidifies their place in the rock, doom metal landscape. The album takes listeners on a journey into the occult, folklore, and the mysteries of Albion. With their unique blend of ’70s rock, doom metal, and enchanting melodies, Green Lung has crafted a sound that is both captivating, unique and immersive.

A Legacy of Fuzz and Groove

Fu Manchu’s roots can be traced back to their beginnings as a hardcore punk act. However, it was when they embraced a more groove-oriented sound that they truly found their stride. The band’s lineup saw some instability in their early years, with notable figures like Brant Bjork (KYUSS/BRANT BJORK & BROS) and Eddie Glass (NEBULA) contributing to their unique sonic palette. It wasn’t until the new millennium that a consistent crew solidified, with Scott Hill (vocals/guitar), Bob Balch (guitar), Brad Davis (bass), and Scott Reeder (drums) forming the core of Fu Manchu.

A Journey Through Space and Time
Fu Manchu’s music has always had a touch of the cosmic, but in recent years, they have ventured further into the realms of outer space and science fiction. “Clone of the Universe” starts out as mid tempo rocker that morphs into a speed punk jam with Scott Reeder pounding out some rapid fire tom fills over the fuzzed out guitar riffs. The song is divided into four parts, each offering a unique sonic landscape that showcases Fu Manchu’s versatility and artistic growth.

The Evolution of Fu Manchu
Throughout their career, Fu Manchu has displayed an impressive level of tenacity and endurance. Their sound, rooted in the bombast of Black Sabbath, has evolved over time, incorporating elements of prog and psychedelia. While their earlier albums laid the foundation for their groove-oriented style, recent releases have seen Fu Manchu explore new sonic territories. “Clone of the Universe” is a testament to their creative evolution, seamlessly blending their signature fuzz-laden riffs with a willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of their sound.

The Resilience of a Stoner Rock Icon

Sevendust-Truth Killer

You’ve been a diehard Sevendust fan since the beginning. You rocked out to their self-titled debut in 1997 and have been hooked ever since. But you have to admit, some of their recent albums haven’t quite captured the intensity and passion of their earlier work. When you heard Sevendust was releasing a new album, you were hopeful but skeptical? Lajon Witherspoon’s vocals are as powerful as ever, and the dual guitar work of John Connolly and Clint Lowery will rattle your walls. The rhythm section pounds with a relentless intensity. This album is a killer return to form and a welcome reminder of why Sevendust will always reign supreme in the hard rock and metal scene. The kings have reclaimed their throne – long live Sevendust!

Pummeling Riffs and Aggressive Beats

From the opening chords of “No Revolution”, Sevendust digs deep into their signature hard rock sound with pummeling riffs, aggressive beats, and Lajon Witherspoon’s raspy vocals. The band holds nothing back, with standout tracks like “Love and Hate” and “Superficial Drug” featuring chunky guitars, pounding drums and in-your-face lyrics.

A Return to Form?

Truth Killer is a return to the melodic hard rock that put Sevendust on the map. While the band’s previous few albums explored different styles, this release has electronic accents and flourishes throughout the album. “We pulled in a lot of electronic elements,” says guitarist Clint Lowery. “In the past, I hired outside programmers, but I did the programming myself. I tried to create a musical bed that made it easy to sing cool vocal parts. We always set a goal to have a certain sound, and we followed through with it. We didn’t compromise. Sevendust continues to deliver the heavy yet hook-filled songs that have defined their career.

Lajon Witherspoon’s Vocals Still Sound Great

Over 20+ years, Lajon Witherspoon’s vocals have only gotten better. His singing on ‘Truth Killer’ is soulful yet forceful, emotive yet energizing. In the verses, his melodic crooning draws you in before he unleashes his full power in the chorus. When the song crescendos, Lajon’s belting is goosebump-inducing. His control and sustain on the higher notes are a testament to his natural talent and dedication to his craft.

With a versatile voice that can pivot from tender to intense, Lajon has always been the not-so-secret weapon of Sevendust. On ‘Truth Killer’, he’s at the top of his game, conveying a mix of vulnerability, angst and defiance. Lyrically, the song deals with overcoming deception and fighting for the truth, themes that Lajon brings to life through his dynamic performance.

Overall, Truth Killer is a guitar-driven album that should please longtime fans of the band. Sevendust have rediscovered their hard rock roots and heaviness, but also continue to push themselves melodically and compositionally. The riffs are memorable, the solos are inspired, and the tones are thick and crushing. Turn it up loud—the guitars on this record deserve to be heard. Sevendust have been at it for over 20 years, but on Truth they prove they still have plenty more to say.

(Desert Spotlight) STÖNER–Boogie to Baja

You ever want to let your hair down, crank up the volume, and just ride the riff? The latest EP from stoner rock trio STÖNER is here to scratch that itch. Their new record Boogie to Baja packs a punch of fuzzy, hard-driving rock that’ll get your head nodding and foot tapping in no time. STÖNER knows how to lay down gnarly desert rock grooves that sound like the open highway at sunset. 5 tracks of sun-baked guitars and punchy drums, Boogie to Baja is a nonstop ticket to good times. So buckle up, turn it up, and get ready to boogie – the riff ride of the summer is here.

STÖNER: The Supergroup Bringing Back Vintage Stoner Rock STÖNER is a stoner rock supergroup made up of legendary musicians Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri. Their new album ‘Boogie to Baja’ brings back the vintage stoner rock sound of the 90’s and early 2000’s. Bjork and Oliveri were both members of Kyuss, widely considered pioneers of the stoner rock genre. After Kyuss broke up, Bjork went on to play drums for Fu Manchu and front his own band Brant Bjork and the Bros. Oliveri played bass for Queens of the Stone Age and fronted Mondo Generator.

This release has a raw, gritty sound with fuzzy, distorted guitars, melodic basslines, and pounding drums. The power trio of Nick Oliveri, Brant Bjork, and Ryan Güt churn out an irresistible set of stoner rock anthems guaranteed to get your head bobbing. From the opening licks of “Stöner Theme” you know you’re in for a good time. The hard-charging rhythm section provides the perfect backdrop for Oliveri and Bjork to unleash wave after wave of fuzzed-out riffs. Tracks like “Night Tripper vs No Brainer” and “It Ain’t Free” call to mind desert highways and hazy memories of rocking out at secret generator parties. Gut’s pounding drums and Oliveri’s distorted bass form a wall of sound for Bjork’s guitar grooves. His solos are typically more melodic meanderings than all-out shred fests. The album reaches its peak during the sprawling ten-minute jam “Boogie to Baja.” After a few minutes of ominous bass throbs and tribal drumbeats, the full band explodes into a monster riff that tears through the rest of the song. The interplay between the musicians is telepathic, with sudden bursts of speed and changes in rhythm and tempo that showcase their talent. The chunky bassline and soulful guitar licks provide the perfect backdrop for Bjork’s raw, emotive singing and Oliveri’s punk influenced vocal stylings. Infectious percussion and a groovy bass groove transport you to sunny Mexico in this funky, feel-good song. Memorable lyrics like “We’re gonna boogie to Baja, leave all the madness behind” evoke a sense of escapism and wanderlust. The minimalist production and laid-back tempo make this track perfect for zoning out or chilling under the stars. With its mix of hard-driving rock, bluesy soul, and psychedelic dream pop, “Boogie to Baja” has something for any STÖNER fan or casual listener in the mood for an epic soundtrack to adventure, escapism or just rocking out.

The Bottom Line: Does Boogie to Baja Deliver the Riffs? In short, yes – Boogie to Baja brings the riffs and then some. The variation in tempo and style gives the album a nice flow and balance. The stripped-down production and lo-fi quality add to the overall gritty, old-school vibe. It sounds like it was recorded live in Bjork’s desert studio, which gives the album an authenticity and rawness. The focus here is really on the instrumentation. Boogie to Baja is a solid debut that delivers a heavy dose of what STÖNER is all about – massive riffs, hard rock jams, and psychedelic desert grooves. Bjork and Oliveri haven’t lost their touch, and this new project allows them to return to their roots. The band has said ‘Boogie to Baja’ was inspired by the laid-back lifestyle and natural beauty of Baja California. STÖNER invites listeners to shake off their worries, hop in their ride of choice and boogie on down to Baja with them.

El Astronauta – Snakes and Foxes

El Astronauta’s new EP, “Snakes & Foxes,” was released June 23rd, 2023 on Snow Wolf Records. This release showcases the band’s blend of doom/stoner metal, in the vain of Sleep or Super Judge era Monster Magnet. The band also draws some inspiration from bands such as High on Fire, Black Sabbath, and Sleep. The music can best be described as lo-fi doom/stoner rock with additional accents and flousihes of space rock. The vocals on the EP can best be described as “in your face”, with a Buzz Osbourne (Melvins) or Page Hamilton (Helmet) style aggression. The guitar riffs are definitely at the fore front and the “star of the show”.

Track 3 the Gambler and the General could fit right in with mid 90’s era doom/sludge rock of the Melvins or Acid King. Interesting to note the hi-hat count in for the song has a bass note or two and guitar feedback before the intro of the song begins. Whether by design or not it gives the track a raw, DIY. The guitar solo at about 2:40 into the song is direct and to the point without any wasted notes and fits well within the confines of the track.

The closing track, “The Axe of the Hammer” is the standout track on the release. The intro of the song begins with a clean delay effected guitar tone over a reverb and delay heavy vocal line building to the aggressive verse, before transitioning back to a slowed down vocal passage. With the guitar effects and changes in tempo this track is a solid closer for the EP.
